Sellersburg, Indiana 115 S New Albany Street photograph 1973

Description: A photograph of the Empire Theater building located at 115 S. New Albany Street in Sellersburg, Indiana. The site was originally the McCurdy livery stable. Around 1901 Emmett Cuddy built a double store on the site. One side was a clothing store and the other was a grocery store. In the early 1920s Dave Adkins remodeled the building to make it into the Empire Theater. The building sat empty for some years after the theater closed. It was bought by Pastor James Cummins in April 1958 who began worship services in the building the next month. In February 1960, Temple Baptist Church was organized and stayed at this location until June 1961 when their new church opened in Hamburg on HWY 311. Then in 1962 Walter Wilkerson began using the building for a tire recapping business which lasted until 1972. It was bought by Sellersburg State Bank and was torn down in March 1973. The white house next to Empire Theater became the Sellersburg Library in 1979. It was used as a library until 1986 when a new building was built on Indiana Avenue. This house at 121 N New Albany Street is no longer there.
