Photograph taken in 1943 of the Speed Store (left) and the Speed Hotel (right). Highway 31 and the Louisville & Indianapolis Railroad tracks are in the front of the picture. The Speed Store was located on the southwest corner of Highway 31 and Indiana Avenue in Speed Park. The original Speed Store built in 1868 was located across the road and was a general store. The Louisville Cement Company bought the store in 1880 and built this building in 1890. In 1922 part of the building became the towns first post office. By 1951 a need for a full department store had gone and the company leased the store to Glenn Johnson who ran as a grocery store at this location until 1966 at which time the store was moved into the old gymnasium in the Speed Community House next door. The store building was torn down after that time. The Speed Hotel was located on the northwest corner of Highway 31 and Indiana Avenue in Speed, Indiana. The building was built about 1860 and was the residence of the Bottorff family. In 1921 an addition was added to the back and made into a boarding house. In 1925 the home became a hotel owned by Louisville Cement Company and managed by W.R. Ramsey. In 1926 E.J. Buxton took over management followed by Mr. and Mrs. Robert Regan and Mr. And Mrs. T.A. Pendygraft. In 1958 Joe and Lavina Sexton became the owners and operators of the hotel. This building is no longer there. |
