Sellersburg Church of Christ pre-1950 photographs Sellersburg, Indiana

Description: Four photographs of Sellersburg Church of Christ on South New Albany Street in Sellersburg, Indiana. The origins of this church started in 1798 when the Regular Baptist Church was organized in Sellersburg. They became the Silver Creek Baptist Church which had a church northeast of Speed on Silver Creek. In the 1820s a division in the church created two groups. One group began following the Christian teachings of the New Testament and by 1832 started meeting at a school on Camp Run Creek. They built a church in Hamburg and became the Camp Run Christian Church. In 1871 Camp Run Christian Church leased space from the Regular Baptist Church who now occupied a church on South New Albany Street in Sellersburg. In 1872 Camp Run Christian Church bought the church from Regular Baptist Church and changed their name to Sellersburg Church of Christ. This is the church building in the pictures here. This building was razed in 1950 and the next year the new brick church was built that is at 201 S. New Albany Street.As a side note, St. Pauls Evangelical and Reformed Church built a church next to this one in 1890. St. Pauls Evangelical & Reformed Church becoming known as St. Pauls United Church of Christ in the 1950s while still being located next to Sellersburg Church of Christ. They then built a new church on Old HWY 60 in 1969 at which time their name became United Church of Christ.
