Vin Hannell, Artist

Description: The Hannells came to the Furnessville area from Chicago during the Depression and were founding members of the artists community that flourished there. V.M.S. Vin Hannell was a painter and a wood sculptor who exhibited nationally and garnered many awards for his work. The Hannells built a studio and kiln near their home and used the native red clay to produce highly prized pottery. The Hannells were founding members of the Association of Artists and Craftsmen of Porter County, and were instrumental in organizing the long-running annual Chesterton Art Fair. Following her husbands death in 1964, Hazel Hannell continued to operate the Hannell Pottery until the late 1980s.
