Bonneyville Mill and Pratt Truss Bridge

Description: This photograph shows the Bonneyville Mill and the Pratt Truss Bridge across the Little Elkhart River. The land in this area was purchased in 1832 and later sold twice, lastly purchased by Edward Bonney in 1837. Later that year it is speculated that local farmers assisted in the construction of the mill. Bonney had moved here from New York and dreamed of turning Bonneyville into a thriving metropolis. Bonney sold the mill in 1844. There were subsequent owners to the mill--Garber, Daily, Blood and Mauk--who continued to operate the mill into the 1960s. In 1969, funds were raised to purchase the mill which was then deeded to the county parks department to save it from being torn down. It is the oldest operating grist mill in the state of Indiana. This photograph was taken between 1900 and 1910.
