Six-Span Bridge, new

Description: The Six-Span Bridge which crosses the St. Joseph River east of Elkhart into Bristol was built around 1900. It took its name from the six wooden spans of which it was constructed. At the time it had only one lane. In later years the river bank on the south was built up, eliminating the need for two of the spans when the bridge was remade into a two-lane structure. The bridge, however, has kept its name. In 1968 the bridge was replaced by a modern concrete structure with four lanes. Notice in this photo of the new bridge that there are six sections or spans once again. This photograph was taken in August 1968.
