Description: |
Elkhart County Home was a retirement facility for county residents who lacked personal funds and/or had no family to care for them as they aged. In 1972 and 1973 there was controversy over proposals to close the home. County officials were in favor of phasing out use of the home and instead contracting private services. In 1972, one thousand tax-payers signed a petition to prevent the county council from taking direct action, but a year later it appeared that citizens were concerned that the council was doing piecemeal what it had refrained from doing in one step the previous year--closing the home. |
