Description: |
During the reign of Queen Victoria (1837-1901) in England known as the Victorian era, women and girls made jewelry, memorials and wreaths for home decor from the hair of family, friends or deceased loved ones. Ladies magazines gave homemakers complete instructions for doing hair work crafts. Professional jewelers, mail order catalogs and department stores also sold hair jewelry. These keepsakes were given to family and close friends much like we give photographs today. Martha Chastain-Gough made this wreath featuring a hand holding two flowers in 1881. |
