In 1902 Indiana celebrated the dedication of a monument to the Civil War first discussed in 1875. Designed by Bruno Schmitz of Berlin, the monument is built of Indiana Oolitic limestone. Construction began in 1889 as a monument to Indiana’s Civil War soldiers’ and sailors’. The 284 feet 6 inch tall tower now honors all of Indiana’s heroes who died in service before World War I. This medal, a souvenir from the dedication ceremony, commemorates the event. The Whitehead & Hoag Co. made the medal in Indianapolis, Indiana. |
