Wendell Willkie political compact and button

Description: Have you ever heard of Wendell Willkie? Before running as the Republican candidate for President of the United States against Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1940, Willkie had never run for public office. He grew up in Elwood, Indiana and graduate from Indiana University Law School. Willkie become a lawyer like his parents and later a business executive. Even though he considered himself a Democrat, Willkie disagreed with Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s New Deal Programs in America. Speaking against these programs, he gained popular support throughout the country. Nominated by Congressman Charles A. Halleck of Indiana, Willkie and running mate Charles L. McNary ran as Republicans. They received 45% of the popular vote, but only won a majority of electoral votes in ten states. Even though he didn’t win the election, Willkie served as a personal emissary abroad for Franklin Delano Roosevelt working for international cooperation, peace and freedom.
