Hardtack

Description: During the Civil War, soldiers didn’t always have access to fresh food. One of the armies’ solutions was hardtack, a very hard and dry bread meant to keep for a long time. It was not enjoyable to eat because it tended to be stale and was very hard, and had to be soaked in coffee or something else in order to eat it. Soldiers weren’t fond of it and had lots of nicknames for it—tooth dullers, worm castles, and sheet-iron crackers.
