Doll

Description: Decorated button blankets, like the one this doll is wearing, were first created in the 1800s. Fur trappers and the Hudsons Bay Company traded plain wool blankets with the Kwakiutl peoples of the Northwest, and then each family decorated the blanket with their unique crests. The crest designs were first decorated with dentalium shells, a tubular shell found on the west coast. By the middle of the nineteenth century, pearl buttons soon became available. Also, blue duffle blankets with the designs appliquéd in red stroud cloth became popular. Frances Bringloe created these types of dolls to educate people in Native cultures, as well as general American history. All of her dolls wear historically accurate and scaled clothing. This particular doll was made in the 1950s.
