Child’s quill vest

Description: Buffalo hides were used to make robes, tipi covers, clothing, moccasins, and bags. Women usually prepared the hides, tanned and removed the hair, if necessary. Women spent many hours with the preparation of the hides, as well as with the decorating. Western-style clothing was often copied or reworked to fit men, women and children. Made around 1890, this particular Lakota child’s vest has a leather front with quillwork, but both the back and the lining is made from calico cloth.
