Description: |
Women living in the United States in 1895 didn’t usually wear pants, but the introduction of the safety bicycle allowed women to ride safely. Many women simply rode in a skirt, but the more adventurous wore cropped pants like these. The safety bicycle used two wheels of the same size rather than the penny-farthing or Hi wheel bicycle with its giant front wheel. Cheaper than having a horse and carriage, middle class families could afford the inexpensive safety bicycle allowing women to venture further than before. |
