Description: |
African artisans are very resourceful, making art out of things as everyday as bicycle tires, soda cans, buttons and wire. In many different regions, children make inventive and fun toys for themselves out of what most people probably consider trash. Once tourists began collecting them as souvenirs and art, a new art form was born and Africa became a new portal for recycled art. This helicopter was made from found wire by a young boy in the city of Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire) for tourists. Today, many artists and their families run small workshops that produce folk art for local tourists and the world market. |
