Description: |
Traditionally, this type of sandal was worn by the leader of the Asante kingdom, the Asantehene, and by Asante chiefs. Among the Asante, and many African cultures, it is believed that rulers are so powerful and sacred that their feet should not touch the ground. Thus, royal footwear is very important and often elaborately decorated. Today, sandals like these are worn for special occasions by many men with traditional ceremonial Asante clothing such as Adinkre or Kente cloths. The designs on the straps often symbolize Asante folktales. |
