Description: |
Reverse glass painting is a unique art. First an image is drawn on one side of a piece of glass, then painted layer by layer onto the glass. For example, the gold polka dot design on this womans dress appears to be on top of the red background. To create this effect, the dots were painted on the glass first, then allowed to dry. Next, the red background was painted over the design so that on the front of the glass, the red appears to be behind the gold dots. When the painting was complete, the back was taped with paper to prevent the paint from scratching off. The woman in the painting wears a traditional dress and hairstyle worn by many women in Senegal. She plays a traditional West African instrument, the xylophone. Reverse glass painting appears everywhere in Senegal, from works of art to store fronts to taxi cab windows. |
