Description: |
These dolls represent a young peasant bride and groom of late 19th century Russia. The bride, named Darya, wears clothing traditionally worn by married women from the Voronezh Province. Prokhor, the groom, wears clothing typically worn by a bridegroom from the village of Sekisovka, Semipalationsk Province. The original costumes that inspired those worn by the dolls are in the collection of the State Museum of Ethnography, St. Petersburg, Russia. Today, most Russian brides and grooms dress much like those in traditional America. However, some still choose to maintain the customs and traditions of Central Russia, wearing colorful, centuries-old outfits like these. |
