The Peccary is a pig-like animal found in bushy deserts and rock canyons in Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. They are active in early morning and late afternoon when they feed on plants, primarily cactus, mequite fruit, tubers and the occasional worm, frog and lizard. Peccaries can live in herds of 6-30 and can live to be 20 years old. Peccaries are also known as Javelinas a Spanish word referring to the spear-like tusks. |
