Souvenir scarf with map of Nishijin, Kyoto, Japan

Description: This cloth souvenir map was created to illustrate the hallmark of the city it details—beautifully woven silk. It pictures the historic Nishijin neighborhood of Kyoto, Japan. Nishijin is known for the luxurious silk textiles it produced for Imperial court nobles as many as 1,200 years ago. Despite the wars, economic hardships and political upheavals of time, the weavers of Nishijin have managed to preserve their craft. As early as the 1890s, they traveled to study Europe’s state-of-the-art textile industry and returned to Nishijin to introduce advanced Western weaving technology and equipment to their own techniques. Today, the weavers of Nishijin continue to create beautiful loom-woven kimono designs using their traditional skills. However, they are very innovative, using modern technologies such as mechanization and computer control to help reduce costs.
