Barred owl

Description: This owl gets its name from the brown, bar-like streaks running up and down its chest. It is often very active right before dark, searching for food in the swamps, river bottoms, and forests where it lives. It is a state and federally protected species, making it illegal for an individual to own this owl, its eggs, its feathers, or its nests.
