Description: |
Kathmandu, Nepal is one of the most polluted cities in the world. Its streets are overcrowded with gasoline and diesel-run cars, motorcycles and auto-rickshaws, filling the air with pollution. Due to the overcrowding, many people travel by bicycle and bicycle rickshaw. Just like taxis here in the United States, bicycle rickshaws transport people for a small fare. However, the driver, called a rickshaw wallah, barters the highest price that he can. Some rickshaws are beautifully painted with colorful, intricate designs. In 2004, in an effort to help reduce Kathmandu’s pollution, the city replaced its diesel-run auto rickshaws with battery-operated rickshaws called safa tempo (clean tempo) which don’t emit smoke or loud noise. Man-powered bicycle rickshaws similar to this model can be seen mostly in Kathmandu’s narrow, crowded downtown streets where other forms of transport are difficult. |
