Toll sign

Description: In the 1800s this broadside was posted so people would know the cost for traveling on Marr’s Hill Gravel Road in Indianapolis, Indiana. It states in part: “For every sled, sleigh, carriage or other vehicle drawn by one horse, 2 cents per mile.” Throughout history, tolls have been placed on roads to help generate funds to pay for the roads construction or operation.
