Water bag

Description: During the 1930s, Hillis Howie led an expedition of Indianapolis children throughout the western United States to investigate the wildlife and plants of the region. During these Prairie Treks, campers learned to identify birds and animals, pan for gold, and make plaster casts of dinosaur footprints. Howie drove equipment laden Model T’s with water bags like this one tied to the rear posts. Hillis Howie was a long time Indiana resident from 1903-1982. He taught at Orchard School and was a Board member for The Childrens Museum of Indianapolis during the 1930s.
