Cowrie shell navigational chart

Micronesia, a group of islands in the Pacific, developed extensive navigational technology to aid in the exchange between the naturally sparse islands. This chart features wide split reeds of various lengths bound together with twine that creates a 3-dimensional navigational chart of the Marshall Islands and the ocean currents. The cowrie’s shells represent the islands. This particular chart has the island names typed on small pieces of paper and attached to the reeds. |
