Acustic guitar signed by Bob Dylan

Description: Bob Dylans influence on popular music is immeasurable. Throughout his career, he changed the face of many different genres of music, including folk, rhythm and blues, rock, pop and country. Born in 1961 as Robert Allen Zimmerman in Duluth, Minnesota, he wrote poems as a child. While growing up he was inspired by a variety of musicians of the time, including Elvis Presley, Little Richard, Hank Williams and Woody Guthrie. In his early teens, he taught himself how to play piano and guitar and formed his first bands. Once in college, he played in local clubs and gave himself the name Bob Dylan because he thought it sounded cool – perhaps due to his admiration for the poet Dylan Thomas. Inspired by music of the British Invasion in the 1960s, he contributed to the creation of a whole new genre of music known as folk-rock. He triggered a pivotal turning point in folk music of the 20th century -- a transition from traditional songs to personal songwriting. The Beatles owe much of their success to following Dylans lead in writing more introspective songs. Many of Dylans songs have become popular legends, including Blowin in the Wind (made a huge pop hit in 1963 by Peter, Paul and Mary), Mr. Tambourine Man (first sung by The Byrds in 1965), and Like a Rolling Stone (1965). He has influenced and inspired many generations of musicians and continues to do so today. Always a prolific songwriter, he released five albums in the 1990s alone and won the Academy Award for Best Song, Things Have Changed, in 2001. He is a living legend who continues to redefine himself, his songs and the history of music itself along the way.
