Nautiloid

Description: This marine group of Cephalopods has a long geological history, dating all the way back to the Late Cambrian. Cephalopods are predatory animals with well developed sensory organs and tentacles with sucker cups. They have the ability to change color to match their backgrounds as well as possessing ink sacs for squirting dark fluid to escape their enemies. Scientists believe that elongated cephalopods evolved during the Late Cambrian Period. These elongated animals eventually gave rise to the coiled ammonites and nautiloids. Today, there are only around five species of Nautiloids. The shells are external with a squid-like animal occupying the last and largest chamber.
