Yellow-bellied sapsucker

Description: The Sapsucker is a unique woodpecker that derives its name from its habit of boring holes into the bark of trees, letting the sap exude and run down the trunk. The bird will then use its rough tongue to lap up the oozing sap. These birds can be found in much of the eastern half of North America. Among enthusiastic bird watchers it is said that the Yellow-bellied Sapsucker has one of the most distinctive and easily recognized drumming (or wood pecking) patterns of all the woodpeckers.
