A stuffed leather postcard! Someone in Chain of Lakes, Wisconsin sent this postcard to Dr. Sallis Runnells in Indianapolis about 1915. The subject of the card is Theodore Roosevelt, the26th President of the United States. Roosevelt, whowas better known as Teddy, was acharming and adventurous person who lived his life in a bold and daring manner.He is remembered as the commander of the “Rough Riders," the 1st U.S. Volunteer Cavalry regiment during the Spanish-American War, andas the youngest President at 42. Headvocatedfor the construction ofthe Panama Canal, a waterway that cuts across the Isthmus of Panama, linking the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Interested in the conservation of nature, Roosevelt set aside National Park lands during his presidency. On this postcard, Roosevelt is shown wearing a safari outfit – possibly in celebration of his trip to Africa in 1909 following his second term as President. |
