Tabule

Description: The Republic of Sierra Leone is a country in West Africa. There are 18 ethnic groups living in Sierra Leone, with the Temne and Mende peoples making up the largest of the groups. Drums are important instruments in Africa, used both as a musical device and as a tool significant in many ceremonial functions, including dance, rituals, story-telling and communication of messages. This particular drum is a tabule and dates from the 1970s. A chief’s messengers would play this traditional round drum in order to sound an alarm or to call the villagers for a special event.
