Description: |
The city of St. Louis held a World’s Fair to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Louisiana Purchase. Also known as the 1904 World’s Fair, the centennial event was really one year late since the United States purchased the Louisiana territory in 1803! President Thomas Jefferson and French ruler Napoleon Bonaparte are featured on the front of this coin. A map of the United States is on the reverse. Visitors to the fair discovered exhibits about the arts, education, industry, sixty two foreign nations and a carnival amusement park called “The Pike.” This coin was one of many souvenirs carried home to Indiana by Thomas Hendricks in 1904. |
