August 18,1941. Private Alfred H. Stumm, age 35. E-20.Detailed to the shop, He was sent on duty to paint the basement of Chief Fred C. Kennedys home. Fumes from the paint remover caused an explosion when the water heater ignited killing him and severely burning Arnold Phillips who would later become Chief of the Department.After a Grand Jury investigation others were investigated for having work done at their homes but Chief Kennedy was the only one demoted, to Captain.And Chief Herbert H.
