Michael Fitchey was Chief of the Indianapolis Fire Department from 1873-1876 and the first fireman to wear a uniform in 1874.From the director of the Indianapolis Firefighters Museum, Brian Killilea: The funeral of Michael G. Fitchey, 81 years old, who died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. C. H. Barth, 1631 Ashland Avenue, early yesterday morning, will be held at the Barth home at 10 oclock tomorrow morning. Burial will be at Crown Hill Cemetery. The pallbearers will be six firemen, appointed while Mr. Fitchey was head of the department. They are Michael Slavin, William Long, John Stokes, Martin McGuff, James Brannon and Thomas F. Barrett. After Mr. Fitcheys death an autobiography, which he wrote several years ago, and addressed to a granddaughter, Miss Caroline Edna Barth, 1631 Ashland Avenue, was opened. Mr. Fitchey is survived by four children, six grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He was the first building inspector appointed in this city and was chief of the fire department for two terms.
