Address of Col. H.B. Carrington, U.S.A., at Indianapolis, Indiana, June 17, 1869, in Aid of the Erection of a New Church Edifice for the Methodist Episcopal (Colored) Society.

Description: Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church was established in Indianapolis in 1836. As it began to grow it was known as the Indianapolis Station of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. Bethels church building at 414 West Vermont Street was built in 1869 and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991. On the occasion of the building of a New Church Edifice for the Methodist Episcopal (Colored) Society, what would come to be known as Bethel A.M.E. Church, Col. Henry B. Carrington gave this address to people who gathtered at the new church building site, including Indiana Governor Conrad Baker. Carrington became an abolitionist when young and then served as an officer in the United States Army during the Civil War. He also had a career as a lawyer, professor, and author.
