Flanner House Homes Ground Breaking

Description: John White, the first Flanner House Home recipient, and his daughter move a shovel of dirt at the ground breaking ceremonies. As veterans returned from the war and started their families, the need for housing soared throughout the city. For many, it meant moving out to new subdivisions in the suburbs. One program, through Flanner House, brought new homes to areas closer to downtown. It worked with families to pool their labor and build new homes. Groundbreaking on the first home, that of veteran John I. White, took place on 24 August 1950. The program resulted in the building of approximately 181 homes.
