Hoosier Letter

Description: Letter from Sarah T. Harvey to her sister-in-law Abigail P. Harvey. The letter discusses people and places Sarah visited in the Richmond, Indiana area. It contains several references to Hooshers. The letter also discusses life in Indiana through the eyes of a Quaker woman who has recently arrived from Pennsylvania. This is the earliest reference to the word Hooshers or Hoosiers in the Indiana Historical Society manuscript collections to date. The term Hoosher or Hoosier as it relates to the people in Indiana was first published in 1833 in a poem called the Hoosiers Nest by John Finley.
