Review of the Troops by Vice-President Fairbanks, Fort Benjamin Harrison, 1906

Description: View of the U.S. Regular, Indiana and Illinois State Troops and bands on the occasion of Vice President Fairbanks visit. Fort Harrison was opened in 1906 by President Theodore Roosevelt. On August 20th of that year, a review of the troops was given for Vice-President and Indiana-native Charles W. Fairbanks. General Carter can be seen on horseback. Senator James A. Hemenway, Abraham L. Brick, and U.S. Attorney Joseph Kealing were also present. Fort Benjamin Harrison was established as a training center for the Indiana National Guard in June of 1904 in Lawrence Township, Marion County. During World War I it became one of the largest Army training and mobilization sites in the country because of its proximity to major highways and railroads. In May of 1917 an Army training camp was established there with the goal to train 5,000 men as officers in the reserve corps.
