Description: |
Group portrait of students and staff of the Boxley School in Adams Township, part of Hamilton County. The school was named for George Boxley, one of the townships first settlers. He was an escaped prisoner from Virginia who had been charged with inciting an insurrection among slaves for helping some escape North. He built a log cabin for the purpose of educating his children and began taking in other children as people began to settle in the township. In 1851, this larger school was built on Boxleys land. |
