[Streetcar Strike, 1913]

Description: This unidentified photo could be from a strike by Indianapolis streetcar workers that took place in 1913. In the photo, men are gathered on Washington Street between Meridian and Illinois looking North at 3:55 in the afternoon. Beginning on October 31, 1913, six days of protests commenced in reaction to the Indianapolis Terminal and Traction Companys attempts to suppress unionization. Organized by the Amalgamated Street Railway Employees of America, it eventually including close to 10,000 protesters. On November 1, the protests were smaller and still fairly under control. Strikers clogged the streets to stop streetcars operated by strikebreakers and they marched out from the Traction Terminal building on Market and Illinois, a couple blocks from where this photo was taken. On November 7th, the National Guard was called to control the crowds. These protests resulted in Indianas first minimum wage laws.
