Group portrait of company D, S.A.T.C., commanded by Lieutenant E.C. Timms. Military training camps were established on college campuses and other sites throughout the state during World War I. In October 1918, Winona Lake became a training site for motor transport duties and also student army training corps. Over 1,000 soldiers gathered in the hotels of the resort area. When Armistice came in November, the captain from the training camp led his soldiers and the citizens from Winona on a march to Warsaw to celebrate. This image may have been taken at the Indiana State School for the Deaf in Indianapolis. The original nitrate negative was copied with funds provided by a grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission in 1990. This digital image was created from that copy. The copy prints and negatives are stored in Microfiche Number order. Interpositives are stored in PAN number order. |
