Description: |
The Academy of St. Mary-of-the Woods was founded in 1840 by Saint Mother Theodore Guerin and the Sisters of Providence. Beginning in 1854 Diedrich August Bohlen began the first of sixty building projects beginning with the convent and chapel. All eleven main buildings on the site were designed by Bohlen & Son of Indianapolis. Located about five miles west of Terre Haute, Indiana it is the oldest Catholic liberal arts college for women in the United States. This view shows the Woodland Inn, a red brick Victorian house in the center of the campus. Built in 1894 it was once used as a carriage inn but now serves as a home for sisters who are college faculty. Other buildings on the campus are also shown. The original nitrate negative was copied with funds provided by a grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission in 1990. This digital image was created from that copy. The copy prints and negatives are stored in Microfiche Number order. Interpositives are stored in PAN number order. |
