O.T.C. Engineers Fort Harrison, October 1918

Description:	Fort Benjamin Harrison was established as a training center for the Indiana National Guard in June of 1904 in Lawrence Township, Marion County. During World War I it became one of the largest Army training and mobilization sites in the country because of its proximity to major highways and railroads. In May of 1917 an Army training camp was established there to train 5,000 men to become officers in the reserve corps. They in turn would train the thousands of recruits expected at the fort during World War I. By May of 1918 the first of 10,000 men representing a new group of engineer troops arrived at the fort for training in light railway construction and maintenance. This group is among those thousands of engineers that were trained at the fort that year. The men are holding Springfield rifles and have bayonets attached at their belts. The original nitrate negative was copied with funds provided by a grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission in 1990. This digital image was created from that copy. The copy prints and negatives are stored in Microfiche Number order. Interpositives are stored in PAN number order.
