Description: |
The first Indianapolis Derby was held at the Indiana State Fairgrounds race track in 1902. An account of the second Derby Day race was found in the Indianapolis Star for July 5, 1903. The article describes the race, and the thousands in attendance that day at the fairgrounds track. This view shows the finish of a Derby Day race with crowds cheering in the stands. No clues were found on the negative as to the date of this image. Judging by the clothing style the closest guess is around 1910. The original nitrate negative was copied with funds provided by a grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission in 1990. This digital image was created from that copy. The copy prints and negatives are stored in Microfiche Number order. The Interpositives are stored in PAN number order. |
