The first graduating class of sailors at Great Lakes Naval Training Center marches in review before President William Howard Taft. Founded by Theodore Roosevelt in Great Lakes, Illinois, the facility began in 1904 as Great Lakes Naval Station and opened its gates to students on July 1, 1911. This image shows the young graduate sailors marching before President Taft, other dignitaries, and 10,000 civilians. The facility closed briefly in the 1930s and reopened during WW II as the U.S. Naval Training Station; Great Lakes, Ill. The original nitrate negative was copied with funds provided by a grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission in 1990. This digital image was created from that copy. The copy prints and negatives are stored in Microfiche Number order. The interpositives are stored in PAN number order. |
