Description: |
The statue of Lawton originally stood in the yard of the old Marion County Courthouse as shown here, but was later removed to Garfield Park. The General had fallen in battle in the Philippines in 1899. President Theodore Roosevelt attended the unveiling ceremony which followed a reception at the Meridian Street home of Vice President Charles Fairbanks. A national scandal followed when it was learned that liquor had been served to guests at the reception. The original nitrate negtive was copied with funds provided by a grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission in 1990. This digital image was created from that copy. |
