William Trail, Jr. and his brothers, Benjamin, James, and David were soldiers in the 28th United States Colored Troops, Indiana regiment. David eventually served in the 14th Unites States Colored Troops. Benjamin and James did not survive the war. David returned to Indiana where he remained until his death in 1869. William, Jr. also returned to Indiana and farmed in Henry County. The collection consists of one letter written Sepember 4, 1865 by African American Civil War soldier, William Trail, Jr. to his brother David also a soldier serving in the war. William assures David of his well-being and inquires of Davids health. He tells of their brother James case of scurvy. He also tells of his military experiences and of news from home. |
