Railroad Cut, Madison, Indiana

Description: The Madison and Indianapolis Railroad incline is one of the nations steepest standard gauge lines. It was cut through stone hills from 1836-1841. A specially built powerful engine, the Reuben Wells, pushed cars up the steep grade and operated from 1868 until 1905.
