Description: |
In 1876 Jordan bought a small butter and egg company and soon added other poultry products. He expanded his market by packing perishable goods in ice, and then introduced mechanical refrigeration to open the eastern market to Midwestern poultry farmers. By 1894 the Arthur Jordan Company had more than 50 packing and cold storage plants in Indiana and Illinois devoted to packing and shipping poultry and eggs—the largest business of its kind in the U.S. |
