This ledger of the Ohio Company (of Associates) contains land invoices dating back to 1787. The Ohio Company was an organization of of English settlers and Virginians, established in 1748, to promote trade with Native Americans and establish control of the Ohio River valley by purchasing and reselling land in the west (what is now Ohio and Indiana). Names listed in the ledger include Revolutionary War notables such as Benjamin Tallmadge (military officer, politician, businessman), Winthrop Sargent (United States patriot, politician, and writer), and Ebenezer Sproat/Sprout (military officer and Ohio pioneer). |
