Records of the Palmyra Circuit of the Church of the United Brethren in Christ, of Washington and Harrison Counties, Indiana, from 1878 to 1913. Includes membership lists for the classes at Martinsburg, Pleasant Grove, Mt. Pleasant, Palmyra, Brush College, and Fairdale (Ramsey). Lists members’ names, dates of joining the church, age, when and by whom baptized, marriage information, and dates and reason if membership ceased, including some death dates. The book also contains minutes from quarterly conference meetings throughout the period. These include reports of preachers, stewards, and various committees, including Sunday Schools, that detail the activities and finances of the church. Among the members noted are: Isaac Hiestand, J. D. Current, James Mills, William A. Martin, John Breeden, James Fowler, David W. H. Wolfe, John Jones, Hite H. Hiestand, John Welker, John B. Crayden, John L. Brandenburg, William Snyder, John Hile, George A. Hottell, and U. Grant Watson. Women played an increasingly prominent role, and the records show that two women were approved as preachers – Ida M. Hottell and Donnie Minton, both of whom traveled to different regions of the country and continued their careers as ministers throughout their lives. |
